CHALLENGE

Encourage your students to actively reflect on the purpose or overarching goal of their game as they design. One way to ensure the game has a clear purpose is to consider the audience during the design phase. Designing for an authentic audience leads to deeper engagement and purpose. To design for an authentic audience, consider the following:

Who are your students designing for? Who will ultimately play their game?

Will your students design for their peers or younger students to help them learn the content through engaging in the game?

Will the game be shared with their families to foster a stronger connection between home and school?

Will the game be shared with a larger local or global community in order to see the larger impacts of the students’ creative work?

What is the challenge that this audience will tackle through playing the game? How is this challenge deeply connected to the audience’s experiences, values, or goals?
